dwell magazine just launched a new website with posts written by their famed editors. i’m really enjoying a piece by sam grawe on designer charles harper- whose artwork inspired a new line of upholstery and furniture by todd oldham for la-z-boy (to come next year). grawe visited harper’s home (where he’s working away at age 83) for an interesting interview. you can click here to read the article, great stuff.

Oh thank you! I have loved Charley Harper for so long… I had his wonderfully illustrated Golden Books when I was a kid, which may have seeped modernism into my head at an early age. I still have them, and I am so happy he is getting renewed attention!
Charles Harper is a genius, his limited addition prints are available on ebay for very reasonable prices, thru Chrisman Art – I scored one of his birch tree owl prints for 40 dollars!

Thanks for the link to his interview Grace, his work is so inspiring.
Thanks so much for posting that! I actually have a signed print of his and I didn’t even know it until I saw your post and thought, wow, that looks like that chipmunk print I got at the thrift store!
Beautiful stuff!
i’ve always been a fan of harper but his prints are so small–i would love to see posters of them rendered huge and abstract. interesting that he’s going to get a revival now (inevitably!)

I’ve loved his work since I picked up a poster he designed for the National Park Service a few years ago in a Park gift shop. Beautiful stuff — I’ve always wondered if it was just me that thought so…
I love these prints…
Love his work. Judith
charley harper is amazing, his national park service illustrations just amaze me with the visual invention. it’s a shame more people aren’t familiar with his work
