Wow. That’s particularly depressing. Only high-end design for those who can pay for a designer to get pieces for you?

I guess I’d better try and win that lottery…

I believe that it is also to protect the profession of interior design. Many high end retailers only sell to the trade.

But I hate this conversation:

Me – Nice lamp! How much is it?
Them – [quotes a price near the size of my paycheque, but in US dollars]
Me – oh. um. thanks anyway. *click*

i think it depends on the manufacturer. i can only speak from experience with the manufacturers i work with and i know SOME of them dont post retail prices because they often change with the price of materials (example: the cost of steel and titanium shot up this year, so products with large amounts of those go up)

but i agree with you that prices should be more readily available. but i guess they figure if you want it you’ll just call.

don’t know if it’s some dark conspiracy, but it just seems to be the way things are with larger, high-end studios. wish i had the answer, sorry..

I know I can call the retailer and try and find out if I can order this specific product (hard in and of itself), but I don’t want to take the time unless I’m going to follow through – and I can’t if it’s beyond my price range.

Why the secrecy?

One thing I’m puzzled about and maybe you can fill me in – why is it that generally, design sites seem to make it kind of hard to purchase their products? I went there, and found the lamp, and found retailers that carry his lamp. That’s rare! Half the time, there is little information at all about obtaining products. Even then though, they aren’t online retailers, but real stores I would have to go to, and then probably order the lamp special.

I’m curious – is this because many items are made on order? Or is there another, darker reason that high-end designers rarely post where to find their work?
