i was just reading melissa at blue tea bag’s comments under the moderntot post and decided to do something about her cry for affordable design. well, something short of creating it myself.
i’ve decided to institute a new weekly feature on d*s:
focus: affordable design
spotlighting a type of furniture (ie: dining chairs, children’s furniture, lighting), the section will highlight the best of modern design that those of us on a budget can afford. i’m aiming to showcase products under $100, under $250 and under $500. so, affordable design, here i come! (i’ll still mix in my normal posts, but will be sure to focus on an affordable topic once a week).
this will be in addition to the monthly focus: women in design! column, which will continue next week with one of my favorite bay area residents.
so, if you have time, jot down some of your favorite furniture/design categories in the comments section and i’ll start searching for affordable answers to expensive design queries. xo, d*s

What a great idea! How about:
1. Coffee tables
2. Art prints
3. Vases
4. Sheets
5. Throw blankets
THANK YOU!!!!!
Fantastic idea! Add to the list…
6. Bedside tables
7. Bedframes
Lighting!!! So many awesome lamp art out there, and I haven’t seen any of it for cheap.
I’m especially interested in nature-inspired design or things made out of natural materials.
YAY! I’m so excited about this, d*s! I can’t wait to see what we find! :oD
Love this idea! I love the stylish and unique items you feature, but there’s just no way I can afford it. I’d love to see stylish items with prices closer to my meager budget.
Here are my suggestions for the list:
9. Kitchenware (cookware, serving ware, barware, etc.)
10. Storage (from small boxes and bins to larger furniture pieces)
11. Bath (textiles as well as accessories, lighting, fixtures, and so on)

Awesome!
I’ve already mentioned this in the comments, but please add watches to the list. The cool ones are always more than $100!
I have been searching forever for throw pillows that are affordable Specifically I’m looking for rectangular throw pillows, but everything I’ve seen is $75+.
yay affordable :D
im so broke… i see so much on here that i love and want so bad, but the most I can afford is stuff that’s max 50 bucks. I await those posts.
I love this blog, the only blog I read regularly with interest and concentration.
I agree with everyone else — GREAT IDEA. I wanted to add to the list:
- rugs
- handbags
- paper/stationary
btw, your blog rocks.
great idea! I second the call for watches and also ask for COUCHES. they are so damned expensive, and I need one…
What a fantastic idea! There is so much good design there, but it’s unaffordable to most mortals. Here are some things that might be interesting:
1. bedside tables
2. linens
3. prints/wall decor
4. shelving/creative solutions (esp great for a small nyc apt dwellers)
5. tables
6. lighting
7. bath products
8. couches
9. storage solutions overall.

d*s mentioned kid stuff, which I heartily second. . .I LOVE the Oeuf crib and ESPECIALLY the Ian crib at ModernTots. It’s the first crib that actually made my jaw drop (and it wasn’t just the high price!). So, maybe we can find an equally hot one for less than $350.
If someone would make an awesome crib (like the Oeuf or the NURSERYWORKS AERIAL CRIB… “sigh”) for under $350… I’d have another kid! :oD
Oh yeah… I found another blog called “Poor Girl’s Guide to Living Rich” (www.poorgirlsguide.blogspot.com) by a nice gal in Massachusettes named Michele. It’s fairly new, but looks like it has some potential. It’s a little more fashion oriented, but it’s basically about living stylishly on a budget… just what we’re talking about here!
hurray i dont have any money!
